Cheering Section: N.H.L. Playoffs — Identity, Not Victories, Proving Elusive for the Kings
Crossing the intersection at East 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue, I had them lined up perfectly.I stepped in, took a sign and interrupted with a “Let’s go, Kings.”
Great. Some progress is being made. But with a few steps forward, a momentary embarrassing setback was inevitable.
Nothing. No caustic words, no dirty looks, no witty retort new era snapback.
I might as well have said: “Excuse me.Never mind.”
The Los Angeles Kings are on a bit of a roll in the Stanley Cup playoffs. But around New York, they cannot seem to rouse contempt for themselves or fans like me.And that is really what all fans want for their teams. You cannot turn around in any city in the United States without running into a Detroit Red Wings fan. They are all over the place, and the world is a little less peaceful for that reason, God bless them.
The Red Wings, who have an extensive alumni group of top players and have maintained their colors and team crest unchanged, have won 11 championships.
The Kings, on the other hand, have adopted a number of identities since their inaugural season in 1967-68.They have made one appearance in the Stanley Cup finals, in 1993, with Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Dave Taylor, Kelly Hrudey, Luc Robitaille and Rob Blake. That did not end well snapback new era hats.
Since then, the Kings have not been consistent winners or thorns in the side of another team. But the current players, with their swarming forecheck and the level of excitement they take to the rink, are beginning to turn heads the way the stars in the stands at Staples Center do.
At a news conference this month before a Major League Soccer game against the Impact, David Beckham of the Los Angeles Galaxy was asked how it felt to be in a hockey town like Montreal trying to convert people to soccer.
“I think we’re
KNBC-TV in Los Angeles broadcast a public apology for using a crest of the Sacramento Kings as part of a graphic element during a report on the success of the Lakers, the Clippers and, ahem, the Los Angeles Kings this spring.
“Although we didn’t see it at the time, we know that you did,” KNBC’s Chuck Henry said during a recent broadcast.“And to all the fans who let us know your feelings about this, let me assure you that everyone who works to get things right on this newscast feels the same way. We’ve apologized to the team and now, most importantly, to you.”
Wow.That was a long way of saying, “We regret the error.” So television news directors and anchors in the Southland are now quite familiar with the Kings and their fans.Again, progress had been made wholesale hats.
But the logo issue is an important one.The Red Wings, the Rangers and the Devils, to select three, have displayed more consistent, familiar targets on their chests. The Kings, on the other hand, started with a crown fit for a queen, then a shield, a coat of arms on a shield, a more suitable crown and now a new shield. And they have dressed in purple and gold, black and silver, and purple, black and silver. In that light, the Sacramento Kings’ crest, currently purple and black, still falls outside the bounds of good taste, but I can see how someone might have made the mistake.Minor penalty; no suspension. The circle of those who ignore the Kings can easily shrink snapback new era hats.Just read the N.H.L.coverage on popular Web sites like ESPN, TSN and Hockey Prospectus as well as blogs like Kukla’s Korner or Puck Daddy. And listen to panelists during the national postgame shows on NHL Network and NBC Sports Network.
The Kings’ home games generally start at 10:30 p.m.Eastern, presenting a problem for anyone who has to work in the morning, as I do.A little overtime keeps me up till 1:30 a.m., but I understand that others may not want to lose sleep to root against my team.
Perhaps the best reason to dislike the Kings organization may be its strong ties to the Philadelphia Flyers.Ron Hextall, the assistant general manager; the assistant coach John Stevens; and General Manager Dean Lombardi have orange-and-black pedigrees.Forwards Mike Richards and Jeff Carter also have some cheesesteak tucked in their Kings jersey.
These Kings, now in black and silver, are a victory from the Stanley Cup finals, which will make stops at Madison Square Garden or Prudential Center.I hope the metropolitan area boo birds are clearing their throats 59fifty fitted hats. Now get out of my way
Rangers Get Out of Way and Let Lundqvist Win Game Cheap New Era Hats
“You’ve got to make the read,” said defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who led the Rangers on Saturday with 28 minutes of ice time and 4 blocked shots and who had a plus-2 differential.“Is it better to block the shot or to get the opponent out of the way and let Hank do his thing? Our style is to always think shot-block first. But sometimes, the only play you have is to clear the crease — and always, always, you have to tie up sticks.”
Lundqvist stopped all 36 shots by the Devils. As he did in Game 1, he gave the Rangers a chance to win by playing superbly in the first two periods.Lundqvist made six saves on Ilya Kovalchuk — including two off mini-breakaways — and a second-period save against Adam Henrique on the doorstep.
“We spent too much time in our end zone,” Rangers Coach John Tortorella said.“That’s due a little bit to them and due to us also.I thought the second half of the game we were better.Certainly Hank gave us a chance in the first.”
A perfectionist even in victory, Lundqvist criticized his process on the biggest save of the game, a stop on Kovalchuk in the opening minute of the second period.
“I wasn’t patient enough,” he said.“I went down and had to make a glove save on my side. That’s not really the way I want to make a save.I was a little lucky that he didn’t roof it.But the timing was good.I’m happy I made the save and hopefully it sparked the guys a little bit 59fifty fitted hats.”
Tortorella said Lundqvist’s fighting spirit epitomized the Rangers.
“It’s a bit of our personality,” Tortorella said.“He’s a great competitor.”
Lundqvist’s Game 3 shutout was his second of the series and sixth playoff shutout of his N.H.L snapback for sale.career.Without him, the Rangers very likely would not have advanced past Ottawa and Washington in the first two rounds and would not have a 2-1 series lead against the Devils Cheap New Era Hats.
But his play, he said, does not overshadow the performance of the defensemen before him.
“You feel the support from the guys in front of you,” Lundqvist said.“I thought we were much better being closest to them when they were shooting from the point.”
On Saturday, the Rangers blocked 19 shots for a league-high total of 328 in this postseason 59fifty fitted hats. When the Devils managed shots on goal, the Rangers were effective in providing clear views for Lundqvist.“Hank likes to see the puck,” defenseman Marc Staal said NBA snapback hats.“If we can’t block or deflect a shot, it’s up to us to get everybody out of his way.On shots from the point, you have to tie up any sticks around the goal area new era hats. You can’t control what happens if it goes off a body, but you can’t let them deflect shots on goal.”
Communication between the goaltender and his defensemen is crucial.
“Hank doesn’t talk a lot in the room,” McDonagh said.“But he’ll speak up when he has to during the games. He always lets us know when we’re in the way snapback new era hats.”
Referring to the high-quality scoring chances by the Devils, like the defensive lapse leading to the wide-open space between Kovalchuk and Lundqvist, Staal smiled with relief.
“Obviously, he had to make too many big saves,” Staal said.“We’ll address that tomorrow. But it’s another day when we’re happy to have Hank on our side.It seemed like he wasn’t going to let one by him.”
Not if he could see it
On Pro Basketball: Magic Johnson Continues to Build His Legacy
For the past few weeks Johnson has been featured bicoastally as the face of the new Los Angeles Dodgers ownership group in the land of celluloid heroes and the driving force of a famous friendship with Larry Bird that was acted out in the flesh on the Broadway stage.
“Magic/Bird” ended a monthlong run on May 12, but the play as well as his move into baseball were reminders that Johnson has not only remained in the spotlight after contracting the virus that causes AIDS; he has grown far beyond his legacy as a Hall of Fame basketball player.
Johnson, the Los Angeles Lakers’ point guard legend, was universally praised during his career as someone who — in the vernacular of the game — made teammates better. But it is also fair to say that Johnson has earned a place on the mythical Mount Rushmore of his generation’s athletes, whose social contributions have significantly built on competitive triumphs.
Can we dare speak of him across generational lines and with the same hushed reverence afforded Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali and others from a more iconoclastic past? What sounds questionable at best becomes debatable at least when the still-mounting sum of Johnson’s efforts — like standing publicly tall against the tide of AIDS-driven fear and building commercial bridges between corporate and urban America — is considered.“When you look at the totality of his life to this point, you have to say that the way he’s lived has reflected the way he played, in that he elevates those around him,” said Boyce Watkins, an author, commentator and scholar-in-residence in entrepreneurship and innovation at Syracuse University cheap snapback hats.“I believe he absolutely has made himself one of the greatest athletes in terms of social impact Aaron Rodgers jerseys.”
Though he occasionally expressed support for a candidate — Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama in the Democratic primaries for the 2008 presidential election — Johnson has not been outspoken or overtly political, à la Ali.He has not broken a significant racial or gender barrier in the manner of Robinson or Billie Jean King.More than a scowl of protest, Johnson has mostly worn a smile reflecting a man at peace.
But the totality of Johnson’s off-court achievements has made him an indisputable champion of bringing people together. In “Magic/Bird,” we were reminded that it was the sheer force of Johnson’s gregariousness that forged a lasting friendship with Bird, his career-defining rival, while defying those who overstated and exploited the obvious marketing benefits of black versus white Cheap New Era Hats.
At 52, in many ways the new Dodgers ownership’s chosen peace offering to a vast melting pot that had soured on its dysfunctional baseball team, Johnson may be the closest American celebrity of color to reach a true postracial eminence.“I have always talked about Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali being the two men who could bring people together on a global level,” said Richard Lapchick, a human rights activist and social watchdog of professional and college sports cheap snapback hats.“But Magic could be in that category as well new era snapback for sale. When he goes somewhere, he’s going to draw people of any race, any age.He has that charisma and magnetism.”
Lapchick said it had become clear to him that Johnson, by refusing to hide his H.I.V.diagnosis in 1991, as some other celebrities did, humanized the challenge of living while infected with the virus in the face of ignorance and indifference cheap 59fifty hats.“His smile, his public persona, helped change perceptions and brought it into the mainstream,” said Lapchick, who considers Robinson’s breaking of baseball’s color line in 1947 to be the seminal moment in the social history of sports 59fifty fitted hats.
He added that while achievements across generations were all different based on circumstances unique to their time, “We can measure courage, character and commitment.”
But Harry Edwards, a sociologist and longtime champion of African-American advancement in sports, said that Johnson’s achievements — especially those related to the African-American athlete and community — should primarily be viewed as part of a continuum, more so than of generations that were distinctly different
Game 4: Sixers 92, Celtics 83: Sixers Bounce Back and Tie Series
And to do that, all they had to overcome was a 15-point halftime deficit. After being dominated early, the 76ers rallied to earn an unlikely 92-83 win.
“Being down, 3-1, is a total different mentality than being even at 2-2,” Iguodala said.“I feel like they gave us their best shot in the first half.”
Iguodala hit a 3-pointer with 36.9 seconds left to give the Sixers a 5-point lead — their first two-possession margin of the game — and was key in the comeback. The series is tied at two games each, with Game 5 in Boston on Monday.
Iguodala’s shot capped a furious 61-34 run for the 76ers in the second half. They trailed by 18 points in the third quarter and 76ers Coach Doug Collins said it looked as if there was no way that the 76ers would find a way to score.Suddenly, the bench came alive, the defense forced turnovers and the offense found easy baskets in the paint adjustable snapback hats.
“It’s a long game, and you got to find something good to happen to get you going,” Collins said.“And our defense was good in the second half.”
The Celtics were limited to just 37 second-half points with an offense that stagnated and struggled with turnovers baseball caps.Kevin Garnett, who has been dominant in the Celtics’ two wins this series, finished with 9 points and missed 9 of his 12 shots.
The 76ers had five players who scored in double figures, and their bench combined to score 44 points. Both Iguodala and Evan Turner scored 16 points, while all five of Lou Williams’s field goals in his 15-point game came in the second half snapback new era hats.
The Celtics opened the game like a team that smelled blood, jumping to a 14-0 lead 59fifty fitted hats. But by the second half, Celtics Coach Doc Rivers admitted that his seasoned team lost its composure against the inexperienced 76ers.
“Everything we did was the prescription of what you don’t do to beat them,” Rivers said. With the series reduced to a best-of-three battle, the advantage in talent and, especially, experience seems to belong to the Celtics Cheap New Era Hats. But Collins likes his team’s chances 59fifty fitted hats.“Going into the series, I think you’d probably say the advantage would be to Boston with their championship experience late in games,” Collins said cheap new era hats.“But I think our guys have shown, in both Game 2 and Game 4, that we did a nice job closing those games out

Bats: Alderson’s Assessment of Mets Bullpen: ‘A Frustration’
Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson got right to the point while addressing reporters Thursday morning about the bullpen’s latest collapse.
His remarks came about 14 hours after the team designated reliever D.J.Carrasco for assignment, after Carrasco allowed another eighth-inning home run in Wednesday night’s 6-3 loss, giving him a 7.36 earned run average in four games this season.
The bullpen has a 5.31 earned run average in May, eight losses, nine blown saves, and a dwindling number of reliable options authentic new era hats.Closer Frank Francisco — Alderson’s other multiyear-deal recipient — has three losses and an 8.59 E.R atlanta braves hats.A NBA snapback hats.Jon Rauch has allowed five runs and nine hits in his last four innings.
“As far as Terry’s options, he’s a little bit hamstrung right now,” Alderson said.“There are only a couple of guys that have been consistent.Any move that he makes creates some vulnerability.”
“The temptation is always to change,” Alderson said.“It’s probably the easiest, probably the most emotionally satisfying option cheap new era hats. But it’s not necessarily the best thing to do.Because at some point you run out of options and then you have to recycle back 59fifty fitted hats. And in the meantime you impact the psyche of a lot of different people.”
The Mets’ financial situation makes repairing the bullpen more difficult.Alderson spent $11.65 million this offseason on Francisco, Rauch and Ramon Ramirez alone, or about 12 percent of the team’s total payroll. He said he’s always looking for help outside the organization, “but so are about 25 other teams.”
One of those options, Bobby Parnell, doesn’t look like he’ll be given another shot at closing anytime soon.Parnell has a 2.12 earned run average in 18 games this season, but, after six blown saves a year ago, Collins is hesitant to toy with his confidence
NBA snapback hats Goodell Sued in Saints Bounty Case
The lawsuit, Vilma v.Goodell, was filed in United States District Court in New Orleans. It says, “Goodell, speaking publicly about certain Saints executives, coaches and players, in relation to purported efforts designed to injure players, made public statements concerning Vilma which were false, defamatory and injurious to Vilma’s professional and personal reputation.”
Vilma is seeking an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages for Goodell’s “willful and wanton misconduct.”
The league responded in a statement from the spokesman Greg Aiello: “We have not yet reviewed the filing. However, our commitment to player safety and the integrity of the game is our main consideration. We recognize that not everyone will agree with decisions that need to be made.”
The N.F.L.’s investigation said that Vilma, a defensive captain, put up $10,000 for a player to knock Brett Favre out of a playoff game and assisted the former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in establishing the bounty system Cheap New Era Hats.
The lawsuit contains a blanket denial of the league’s claims about Vilma’s involvement in bounty activities. It said that Vilma was not involved in establishing a bounty system and that he never pledged, made or received payments encouraging, or resulting from, hits that injured opponents. The suit also said Vilma never targeted a player in a way that would violate N.F Aaron Rodgers jerseys.L.rules, and that he never paid or intended to pay $10,000 or any amount to knock Favre, Kurt Warner or any other player from a game.
The lawsuit repeated a claim by players and their union that the N.F.L.has not presented evidence or sources to corroborate its findings. If the case reaches the discovery phase, the N.F.L adjustable snapback hats.could be forced by the court to reveal what the league says is voluminous evidence against players and coaches, including firsthand accounts from multiple sources, handwritten notes, e-mails and PowerPoint presentations.
The lawsuit said that Vilma is permanently damaged in the eyes of teams, fans, the media and sponsors.By his being linked to bounties, the suit says other teams will be less likely to sign him, sponsors will not pay him to promote their products and he will have trouble obtaining employment after his football career. It said that Goodell made statements about Vilma with “reckless disregard of their truth or falsity and/or with malice,” and that Vilma has suffered emotional distress because of the situation.
On his Twitter feed Thursday afternoon, Vilma wrote, “Maybe this will get some people attention.”
Proving defamation and winning damages is difficult for a public figure like Vilma because he must prove that the league’s statements were false and that the league knew that they were 59fifty fitted hats.
“Huge hurdle to prove that any statements or charges were made with actual malice or reckless disregard for truth,” said Gabe Feldman, the director of Tulane University’s sports law program, who has provided commentary for the NFL Network.“Clearly, the players are firing all weapons to get this out of the hands of the commissioner and to get their hands on the evidence being used against them.An unprecedented legal challenge to the commissioner is not necessarily surprising given the unprecedented penalties.”
Vilma and three other suspended players — Scott Fujita, Anthony Hargrove and Will Smith — are part of two grievances spearheaded by the N.F.L.Players Association. Those appeals, to a system administrator and an arbitrator, focus on language in the collective bargaining agreement that the union argues would limit the period of time for which players could be disciplined and shift jurisdiction for discipline and appeals away from Goodell NBA snapback hats. The first appeal hearing was Wednesday. The second appeal will be heard May 30 new era snapback
Blue Jays 4, Yankees 1: Blue Jays Beat Yankees on 2 Home Runs
For the first time since Oct.1, 1992, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Red Sox and the Yankees are the two worst teams in the division.Just a few years before the arrival of Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera helped rekindle the Yankee dynasty, the ’92 Red Sox were 71-88 and in last place that day, and Buck Showalter’s Yankees were 75-84, tied with the Tigers and the Indians for second-to-last.
The first-place team that day 20 years ago was the Toronto Blue Jays, who went on to win the World Series. On Thursday, the Jays looked nearly as good, hitting a pair of two-run homers and playing dazzling defense to beat the Yankees, 4-1, and swap places with them in the standings.
The Blue Jays are 21-18 and in third place. The Yankees are 20-18, and in fourth.Boston beat the Tampa Bay Rays and improved to 18-20, meaning that only two games separate the Yankees from last place.
“We’ve got a long ways to go,” Manager Joe Girardi said.“The bottom line is not what place we’re in today, the bottom line is what place we are in on Oct.3 authentic hats.”
The surprising Baltimore Orioles are 25-14 and in first place, a game ahead of the Rays cheap hats. But only six and a half games separate all the teams in the division, which may be the most balanced in baseball.
“Our division is always tough,” Jeter said.“It’s known for being tough.Boston, obviously, is good.Tampa the last few years. Now you throw Baltimore and Toronto into the mix.It seems like everyone is playing good atlanta braves hats.So it’s a tough division. But we’ve got a long way to go.”
After a third consecutive loss, in which the Yankees were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position to make their performance in that department 5 for 41 over the last five games, they remain a bit of a mystery. They hit well early in the season, and their 178 runs are still fourth highest in the league.
So, is this a team waiting to get on a roll to resume its traditional place at the top of the standings? Or is this really who they are, an aging team hovering only a couple of games over .500?
Girardi remains confident that the hitting will soon resume.
“I think we know who we are,” he said before the game.“I don’t think we’ve played up to our ability thus far.I think we’ve been inconsistent in some areas that got us to where we are right now. We’ve had some really good days, and then we’ve had some days where we haven’t pitched very well or haven’t swung the bats very well.”
On Thursday, Mark Teixeira was most emblematic of the struggles, going 0 for 4 as he made outs three times with runners in scoring position.
“We expect to score six or seven runs a game,” he said.“That’s the way this team is.The last few games, it hasn’t happened for us.”
Jose Bautista hit a two-run shot in the third off Phil Hughes, who battled his way through five and one-third innings, despite working without his best stuff. In the seventh, J.P.Arencibia hit a two-run homer off Cory Wade.
The Blue Jays also made three terrific defensive plays.Omar Vizquel dived to take a base hit from Robinson Cano in the eighth; first baseman Edwin Encarnacion gobbled up Raul Ibanez’s sharp grounder two batters later; and Bautista dived to snare a hit by Jeter in the fifth, preventing a single from turning into at triple, at least.
Their defense, combined with the Yankees’ offensive struggles, resulted in another loss, making a very unusual look in the standings.
INSIDE PITCH
Ivan Nova threw his regular bullpen session before Thursday’s game and afterward proclaimed his ankle strong, healthy and ready for his start on Saturday.Nova sprained his right ankle in his last start on Monday, and was removed from that game.“I feel it a little bit,” he said after he threw.“But it doesn’t bother me.I’ll pitch.” 59fifty fitted hats…The Blue Jays played without third baseman Brett Lawrie, who withdrew his appeal and began serving his four-game suspension for throwing his helmet during an argument with Umpire Bill Miller….The Yankees claimed utility man Mike Antonelli off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.Antonelli was selected 17th over all by the San Diego Padres in the 2006 draft and played 21 games (and hit just cheap new era hats.193) during a September call-up in 2008.He played first base, second base, third base, shortstop and left field for Class AAA Norfolk this year
Chasing a Soccer Dream All the Way to Brazil
Having graduated from Princeton in 2006, I was now in the second year of my quest to become a professional soccer player.I spent most of 2007 in San Francisco, playing in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League, a minor league circuit equivalent to Class AA baseball, and then working out for some lower-division clubs in England.
Now I was in Brazil, in January 2008, thinking, realistically or not, that if I could stay focused and work hard and show some promise, I could have an entire soccer career in the hotbed of the sport. The worst case was that I would come home with some valuable credibility as a player and sign with an M.L.S.team for the 2008 season.I was ready for my adventure, even if I could barely speak a word of Portuguese 59fifty fitted hats.
Santo André was a second-division team that was hoping to recapture some of its recent history. In 2004, the club won the Copa do Brasil, a 64-team tournament composed of the top teams from all 26 of the South American country’s states. But now it was simply back to being stuck one tier down from the top, playing in a 15,000-seat stadium that consisted for the most part of concrete bleachers and had definitely seen better days fitted hats.I found a place to live right next to the stadium fitted hats.Since many of my teammates had families, I found myself spending a lot of time by myself in the neighborhood, a busy area about 40 minutes south of downtown.
A two-lane highway ran two blocks east of the stadium, and you could hear the noise of its traffic while hanging around the stadium complex on a day when no game was scheduled. When there was a game, fans would sometimes park miles away and walk because there was not enough space nearby for parking.
Nor was there any room for practice fields, which meant every day was a bus tour as we traveled to different locations around the city, looking for somewhere where we could kick some balls around.Sometimes, we would practice twice a day, in two places. And the best field we practiced on had a surface that was all dirt, a welcome contrast to the bumpy, uneven grass we often encountered.
I was assigned to the reserve team, better known as the Profi B.’ At 24, I was one of the older players on a squad that had players as young as 18.Being a foreigner from an inferior soccer country had already presented a hurdle for me in Brazil, and my age did not make things easier snapback new era hats.In a country where young players were often sold to create big paydays for their clubs, an older player was automatically less attractive. It would be one more obstacle to navigate.
When I got off the team bus for that first practice, I met the coach. To me, he was known only as Barone. He had played professionally in Brazil in the 1980s but now he had a pot belly, a slight limp and a scowl that rarely left his face.
I probably understood about half of what Barone said as he would mumble instructions in Portuguese. To get by, I would usually follow what other players were doing and then wait for an extended break to get a more coherent explanation from the assistant coaches.
What I also did to learn the language was to buy a biography of the English guitar player Eric Clapton in Portuguese and then spend nights reading it with the help of a Portuguese-English dictionary.
Victories and losses meant little to Barone — player development was the key issue — so he would jump on us for mistakes whether we were in a close game or winning, 5-0.And the practices were always intense.Right away I knew I was in a different place when we broke into teams and Barone threw out what is known as a futsal ball.Futsal balls are smaller and have a restricted flight. With significantly less bounce, the ball stays on the ground and encourages more creativity.I soon learned that this ball was a staple in training and that its size and density made everyone’s individual footwork stand out fitted hats.As we graduated to using a standard ball, I began to feel the rhythm and flow for the game that Brazilians are renowned for.I quickly realized that I could do many of the simple things that my teammates could, but that the ease and comfort that they expressed on the ball made my movements seem almost robotic.I fought the game while they embraced it 59fifty fitted hats
