Slap Shot: Remembering 1994: Q. and A. With Mike Richter

It’s early, but have the first two games evoked the 1994 series at all?

What endures most about your series?

That resilience was evident from the very beginning of the series, when you guys lost Game 1 in double overtime, then won Game 2 when you had a shutout.

That’s true.Everyone seems to remember Matteau’s goal in Game 7, but not Game 3.

That’s where you start to feel the leadership in the locker room can make a difference.I really felt that we were, at that moment, having a gut check. We did have strong guys in the locker room, but what were we going to do? We were able to answer it quite quickly.Having goals scored on you, losing periods, losing games, that’s going to happen. But having the game deteriorate as it did in Jersey, and having guys benched, it could have gotten ugly there.I thought it was really impressive that the common denominator was that we knew we could play better. We knew we could win.We knew we had the ability, and we regrouped and off we went new era hats for sale.

If someone said halfway through the year, “You’re going to go into overtime at home and if you score one goal you’ll be in the Stanley Cup finals,” I would have said that’s a pretty good bargain.I’d take that all day long. But still, that was so difficult to deal with mew era snapback hats. The momentum’s always with the other team in that case. They’re over there thinking, “We were looking at the end of the season, now we’ve put them on their heels.” They were seven seconds from a handshake, and then they had momentum. And we’re like, “Eight seconds ago, we were there,” and it’s hard to walk out to the ice for the fourth period and not be thinking about how much things should have been different cheap 59fifty hats. But you can’t think that way. That’s sports. That’s life. You shake it off and look forward.I remember Kevin Lowe saying, “If it wasn’t so difficult, it wouldn’t feel so good when you finally do it Jordy Nelson jersey.” You look back and a 1-0 win in the seventh game would have been an amazing feeling, no question about it.Double overtime to get the win? Even better.

I think I was just plain old upset. As the game’s winding down, you try to keep the puck moving to keep the clock moving, and we had a very quick whistle right before that.I tried to move it, but the whistle moved very fast, and I said something new era hats for sale.Shortly thereafter, I made the save and Zelepukin had a poke at it, then a second poke, then a third poke.I thought I had it wedged under my pad, but he kept getting hits at it.I was in the position where my weight was on one side and my pad was stretched out.I made the save and I figured that the referee had lost sight of the puck and there was too long a time for him to be getting whacks at it.I think it was the right call, but it was upsetting because, in the heat of battle, I thought a quick whistle there would have made all the difference in the world atlanta braves hats. But the way it worked was the way it worked, and it probably worked out for the best.

That really was surreal. You can’t get ahead of yourself, you just have to worry about your position. You’re in this place in your mind where you block out everything else.I’m preparing myself and after all the chances at both ends, after all the great saves Marty had made, this innocent thing goes around the net and Stephane chucks it on.I’m 200 feet away, and I’m looking down the ice.The way the puck looked, there’s this hesitation, for sure.It just seemed so slow. The fans, I don’t think, saw it baseball caps. The referee barely saw the thing, too. There was very little reaction by Marty and the players, and then there was this opening where I go, ‘oh my God, I think that went in.’ But you’re not convinced and you certainly don’t want to start investigating. The hesitation from the crowd gave me no indication, and then the place just exploded. And even then you’re like, ‘is it really over?’ I felt that seven games later, when we were in the Finals. It’s very odd to be deeply immersed in a game and then, an instant later, the series is over

snapback for sale Mickey Wright, Credited With Best Swing Ever, Is Honored

“If she didn’t hit the ball in the center of the clubface every time, she thought something was wrong,” said Louise Suggs, her friend and rival.
Among some 200 personal artifacts in a permanent display at the United States Golf Association Museum here, Wright’s clubs are her most precious possessions. The Mickey Wright Room packs medals, trophies, awards, photographs, clothing and films from her career into a 400-square-foot space.
Wright, 77, is only the fourth player — and the first woman — to have a gallery honor her name at the museum, joining the golf icons Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Arnold Palmer. If there were ever a doubt, her place as part of the celebrated history of the sport is now drawn in indelible ink.
“She cried when I told her,” said Rhonda Glenn, a U.S cheap 59fifty hats.G.A.historian and longtime friend, who informed Wright in November that the U.S.G.A.executive committee had approved the room cheap packers jerseys.
Wright is tall and graceful with a willowy figure. Her simple, rhythmic swing still holds fascination for golfers and is often called the greatest ever.Wright possessed the balance of a ballerina. The ball simply exploded off her clubface. The Hall of Famer Marlene Hagge, giving voice to a feeling her peers shared, once said Wright could hit a 2-iron like a man.
“I could hit it so well,” Wright said recently in a telephone interview.“I used to say the second-greatest feeling in the world was a high 2-iron to a well-trapped green.”
And what was the greatest feeling? “Winning,” Wright said.
She did plenty of that.Wright captured 82 L.P.G.A.titles and is the only woman to have held the four majors at one time, a feat she accomplished in 1961 and 1962.
Several L.P.G.A.players, including the reigning United States Women’s Open champion, So Yeon Ryu, and the former United States Amateur champions JoAnne Carner, Morgan Pressel and Wendy Ward were among those who attended a private unveiling of the exhibit held May 15 at U.S adjustable snapback hats.G.A.headquarters, not far from where the final round of the L.P.G new era snapback for sale.A.Sybase Match Play Championship is being contested new era hats for sale.
All that was missing was Wright.A shy, intensely private person, Wright begged off, claiming a scheduling conflict.(She said she intended to visit during the summer.) Glenn read a letter from Wright in which she thanked Carner, who spoke on her behalf, for missing a day of fishing.
Initially, Wright doubted whether she had much memorabilia to contribute.Soon items were uncovered stashed under beds, in closets and at the back of the attic.By the time she finished, 34 boxes filled the living room. When the exhibit opens to the public on June 16, visitors will also see the 1955 Bulls-Eye putter Wright used in winning 81 of her 82 official career victories, including 13 major championships. The putter was a gift to Wright from Mary Lena Faulk, the 1953 United States Women’s Amateur champion.“I was not a good putter when I came on tour,” Wright said snapback for sale.“It helped so much that I never gave it up snapback for sale.” All these years later, Wright’s swing remains the envy of the golf world.Among those who have praised it are Hogan and Byron Nelson.
Glenn has not forgotten the sequence of events when in the span of a couple of weeks she spoke to both Texas legends.
It was spring 1988, and Hogan had agreed to do a rare interview with her. While setting up her recorder, Glenn passed along Wright’s regards.“He leaned back in his desk chair, looked at the ceiling, got this big, wonderful smile and said: ‘Mickey Wright, greatest golf swing I ever saw.Boy, what a swing,’ ” Glenn said

Sun 78, Liberty 73: Liberty Fall to Sun in Season Opener at Madison Square Garden

The Liberty were back home at Madison Square Garden on Saturday for a one-night-only performance, and the arena’s layout had changed since their last home game in New York, on Sept.5, 2010.Beginning last summer, renovations forced the Liberty to play home games at the Prudential Center in Newark for three seasons.
But with the Devils hosting the Rangers earlier Saturday afternoon in Game 3 of the N.H.L.Eastern Conference finals, the Liberty were able to squeeze in a surprise home game on the floor where they played their first 14 seasons in the W snapback new era hats.N.B.A.
“Any time you get to play in M.S.G., it’s special,” Miller said NBA snapback hats.“I think that got us excited.”
On short notice, a crowd of 8,112 filled the lower bowl of the arena and watched the Liberty fall to the Connecticut Sun, 78-73.
The Liberty led throughout the second and third quarters, spurred on by Cappie Pondexter and Plenette Pierson, who scored 19 and 15 points.
The Sun regained the lead, their first since 1 minute 25 seconds into the first quarter, on a layup by Tina Charles that put Connecticut ahead, 67-65, with 3:56 left in the game.Charles led the Sun with 19 points and 13 rebounds.Liberty Coach John Whisenant said Charles was the difference in the second half, when “she got every rebound or a hand on every rebound Aaron Rodgers jerseys.”
“My team battled and I was proud of the fact that they did; we made major strides as a unit,” Whisenant said. But he added, “We weren’t as efficient as we must be to win in this league.”
Neither team found a rhythm in the first half, each shooting under 36 percent. The Sun also had eight turnovers, allowing the Liberty to build a 41-33 lead at halftime.
A particularly undisciplined stretch of play marked the final minutes of the second quarter, when four technical fouls were assessed, including three in a 36-second span.Pondexter hit a technical free throw with 1:16 remaining in the quarter to cap a 9-0 run that gave the Liberty a 39-30 lead atlanta braves hats.Pondexter led all scorers with 13 first-half points.
The Sun regrouped at halftime, opening the second half with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 41-41.The two teams kept pace for the remainder of the quarter, until the Liberty finished on a 7-0 run for a 58-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Liberty, however, could not hold the momentum.
“We got stagnant,” Whisenant said.
The Sun came back again at the beginning of the fourth quarter, going on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 58-58.The Sun outscored the Liberty by 27-15 in the final 10 minutes.A jumper by Asjha Jones with 31.4 seconds left gave them the lead for good at 73-71.
Asked if the Liberty had given away an opportunity, Whisenant said, “No question.”
The fans, including the former Knick Larry Johnson and current guards J.R.Smith and Iman Shumpert, did their best to carry the team many of them missed last summer.
“I thought we had a great crowd and a great atmosphere,” Whisenant said.
Pondexter said she was excited to be back in the Garden.“I am definitely going to miss it,” she said.“It’s too bad we can’t play here more often.”
Kara Braxton, who was acquired from Phoenix in a trade last August for Sidney Spencer, has known only the Prudential Center as home.
“There are a lot of emotions; it’s my first game here as a member of the Liberty,” she said.“We were fortunate to even attend the Rangers game here on Thursday new era hats for sale.”
During the pregame video introductions, numerous players screamed “We’re Back,” delighting the crowd. The Liberty’s next home game is Tuesday at the Prudential Center, against the defending W.N cheap new era hats.B.A.champions, the Minnesota Lynx.
Braxton, who finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds, said, “I can’t wait to get back here

Reds 6, Yankees 5: Reds Hold Off Yankees as Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short

They had actually gotten a couple of hits with runners in scoring position, they noted. They put together a ninth-inning rally, which, though it fell inconveniently short, could lead to better results in the near future, they hoped.
And despite losing for the fourth time in their past five games, they discovered they have the same record (21-19) after 40 games that they had last season, when they finished with the best record in the American League.
So if fans are nervous about the murky direction of the 2012 Yankees, the players say they are not.“I think we’re almost exactly where we were record-wise as we were last year at this point,” Nick Swisher said fitted hats.“People are jumping off bridges and stuff. In here, we feel calm.”
Swisher said there was no lack of confidence in the offense, despite the recent difficulties. When asked to specify what the overall mood of the team was, he shrugged and fell to his best breezy vernacular.
“Chill,” he said.“Calm.Smooth authentic new era hats.”
But things have not gone so smoothly in recent games. The Yankees have had trouble getting on a winning streak, and their inability to accumulate hits with runners in scoring position has plagued them as much as anything over that time.
The Yankees came into the game with only three hits in their previous 48 at-bats with runners in scoring position. So going 2 for 7 in those situations Saturday was a vast improvement. And both hits came in the two-run ninth.
“Maybe what we were able to do in the ninth will turn things around a little bit,” Manager Joe Girardi said.
Trouble was, the Yankees needed at least three runs, not two. After being overwhelmed in the eighth in their first encounter with the hard-throwing Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman, who was throwing 99 miles per hour, the Yankees faced closer Sean Marshall in the ninth, trailing, 6-3 cheap 59fifty hats.It was a far more favorable match up.
Raul Ibanez doubled to right-center and scored on Swisher’s single to center.Swisher’s hit ended an 0-for-22 sequence with runners in scoring position going back four games.Russell Martin struck out looking, but Andruw Jones singled, and the Yankees had runners at first and third.Jayson Nix slapped a single through the left side of the infield to score Swisher, and for the first time in seven games, the Yankees had more than one hit in a game with runners in scoring position Aaron Rodgers jerseys.
Reds Manager Dusty Baker replaced Marshall with Jose Arredondo with runners at first and second with one out, trying to protect a 6-5 lead.He got Derek Jeter to hit into a fielder’s choice for an important out.Jeter hustled down the line to avoid a double play, but Curtis Granderson hit a dribbler down the first-base line to end the game.
Granderson went 0 for 4, as did Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is batting.278, but his power numbers are down.He has 5 homers and 15 runs batted in, 10 fewer than Ibanez. His last home run came on May 6, and since that day he has only one run batted in.
He said he felt fine physically, and had been working diligently with the hitting instructor Kevin Long.He pledged better results, and also expressed more urgency than anyone else has recently.
“My numbers are going to be there at the end of the day, there’s no question,” Rodriguez said.“The thing is we’ve got to put it to work right away because our team needs victories. Our fans, our coaches and players expect a lot from me, and I’ll be there.”
Another somewhat alarming trend was seen in a second straight disappointing start by Ivan Nova, who struck out a career-high 12 but allowed five runs in his second consecutive game, including a tiebreaking three-run homer by Joey Votto in the fifth.
“I don’t care about the strikeouts,” Nova said.“I’m not pitching good right now.I’m making a lot of mistakes new era hats for sale.”
INSIDE PITCH
Mark Teixeira, his voice raspy and his demeanor subdued Saturday, said he was reaching his final options in his battle to shake an infuriating cough, which is simply rest.Joe Girardi gave Teixeira his second game off in a row Saturday, and may rest him again Sunday in the hope that this will be the answer after several medications have failed. If rest does not work, Teixeira said he would have only one last option.“Adapt,” he said, meaning to just play through it Aaron Rodgers jerseys. The cough has been diagnosed as a symptom of severe congestion in his bronchial passageways.Teixeira has had numerous tests and nothing more serious has been detected, he said mew era snapback hats.He has been assured by doctors that it will eventually disappear

Bayern Munich 1, Chelsea 1; Chelsea Wins Shootout, 4-3: Champions League — Chelsea Beats Bayern Munich on Penalty Kicks

Given a reprieve after his mistake in extra time, Drogba converted the penalty kick against Bayern Munich that gave the Blues the most coveted title in club soccer for the first time.
Drogba, a 34-year-old striker from Ivory Coast, brought Chelsea back from the brink on a goal with just two minutes remaining in regulation to tie the score at 1-1.Then, after 30 tense minutes of overtime, Drogba scored the final and deciding penalty to give Chelsea the win, 4-3, in the shootout.
“I’ve been here for eight years and always so close and so far at the same time,” said Drogba, who may not return to London as his contract expires next month.“Today, we have it, we have this cup.The cup is going back to Stamford Bridge, and this was the best feeling ever.”
The game had all the drama that a major final demanded, and it concluded with a title that ended years of frustration in European play for Chelsea. The victory must have eased the memory of Chelsea’s defeat in the 2008 final to its rival Manchester United, also in a shootout. And it stifled the retirement-home jokes about the team’s key players, whose ability to compete in their 30s at the top level of soccer was often questioned.
An ecstatic Frank Lampard, 33, who has played for Chelsea since 2001, carried the trophy onto the field, streamers in Chelsea blue and white tied to the handles of the cup.
“In Moscow, it was very difficult, very painful for the players, the club, for the fans,” Drogba said of the 2008 defeat.“Today, we managed to change it, and again it was an amazing game, a crazy game.”
The defeat was especially bitter for Bayern. It not only had to watch as Chelsea celebrated on its home field, but it also controlled play throughout, taking 35 shots to Chelsea’s 9.
For more than 80 minutes the championship game followed a predictable script.Bayern had the ball.Bayern got close to the Chelsea goal.A swarm of blue-clad defenders smothered the attack cheap snapback.
After 82 scoreless minutes, the game seemed destined for penalty kicks, and it was.But the path to get there was unexpectedly thrilling.
In the 83rd minute, Bayern finally made the most of one of its chances when Thomas Müller bounced a header off the grass and over Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
“Thomas!” screamed the announcer.“Müller!” the crowd answered — once, twice and a third time.
There were seven minutes to go and the dream of a European title at its home stadium seemed closer and closer as time wound down.Bayern dominated Chelsea on corner kicks throughout, taking 20 to Chelsea’s 1.But Drogba made sure the only corner was one that counted.
With two minutes to go in regulation, Drogba silenced the celebrating crowd, driving home a header on Juan Mata’s corner kick.Bayern goalie Manuel Neuer could only deflect the ball into the net.
Bayern had another chance to win five minutes into extra time when Drogba fouled Bayern’s French star, Franck Ribéry, in the penalty area, a mistake that could have cost Chelsea the game and negated his earlier heroics. But Arjen Robben took the penalty and kicked the ball low, and Cech stopped it at the line.
The most dominant team in the history of German professional soccer, with a reputation here similar to that of the Yankees, Bayern ended the season without a title, failing to win the Bundesliga title, the German Cup and now the Champions League.
This was without question the bitterest taste of all.
Each club had an allotment of 17,500 tickets, but Bayern fans clad in red and white outnumbered the Chelsea blues. In many ways, the pressure was all on Bayern. Its fans and management expected a victory on home turf.Chelsea could blame injuries and its four suspended players, including John Terry, the captain, to Bayern’s three if it came up short again new era hats for sale.Time and again, Bayern had chances in regulation and in extra time new era snapback for sale.As late as the 107th minute, Ivica Olic, the Croat substituted for Ribéry, took a soft cross from Philipp Lahm and sent the ball rolling just past the far post. The shootout came in front of the screaming Bayern fans, a sea of red and white authentic new era hats.Lahm, the Bayern captain, converted the first penalty. Then Neuer blocked Chelsea’s first try by Mata.Once again, it seemed as if Bayern would win, exactly as it dispatched Real Madrid in the semifinals.
Mario Gómez, the second-leading scorer in the Champions League this season, was barely a presence in the match, but he made his penalty kick.David Luiz countered for Chelsea, and it was 2-1 cheap packers jerseys.
Neuer took the next shot and sent it past Cech to give Bayern a 3-1 advantage.
Lampard stepped up and drilled the next Chelsea penalty high into the net, setting up the dramatic conclusion.First, Olic was denied as Cech guessed right and batted the ball away.Chelsea’s Ashley Cole made his penalty, and it was now 3-3.Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has been at Bayern since he was on the youth squad, stepped up to take his turn authentic hats.He must have known that Drogba was waiting behind him.He hesitated and took a stutter-step before sending a soft kick off the goal post.He walked away with his shirt pulled over his head, and Drogba did the rest.
As Drogba’s shot went in, several Chelsea fans managed to rush the field before a line of green-uniformed German police could fan out across their end.Schweinsteiger gripped his head in disbelief as stadium employees began preparing for the trophy ceremony and Chelsea’s name was inscribed into the cup

new era hats for sale Bats: For Some Mets, the Series in Toronto Will Be a Time to Rest

TORONTO — Last weekend in Miami, as his team prepared to embark on a stretch of 20 games in 20 days, Terry Collins circled the Mets’ three-game series in Toronto as an opportune time to get some of his regulars off their feet.

“We were told in spring training to make sure this guy doesn’t get overly fatigued,” Collins said of Davis, who was believed to have contracted valley fever, a fungal infection of the lungs, in the preseason.Collins said the illness has not been a topic of discussion all season, but added, “A day now and then isn’t going to hurt him.”

“In the American League, they go out and find guys who can D new era hats.H.,” Collins said.“In the National League, we take a guy like Lucas Duda, who’s an everyday player, and try to get him off his feet, to get him in the D.H new era hats for sale.role, and then play someone who’s not an everyday player and put him in the lineup.”

“I feel O.K.,” said Wright, his raspy voice suggesting otherwise.“It’s just one of those things that takes a few days to get rid of.”

“I think it’s a good idea, just because there’s a long way to go,” he said NBA snapback hats.“It’ll be nice to get a blow, refresh a little bit.”

Collins said he would then likely rest Daniel Murphy on Monday, when the Mets open a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jason Bay, who fractured a rib on April 23, took light swings off a tee Friday afternoon with the aim of taking batting practice Monday before the team’s game in Pittsburgh. The best case scenario for Bay would have him returning near the end of May cheap snapback.

In Florida, Thole would join Ruben Tejada, who strained his right quadriceps on May 6, who has been taking ground balls, but not running wholesale hats.

“What are we going to do? I don’t know right now,” Collins said of his roster.“We’ll worry about that when it happens Jordy Nelson jersey

For Jockeys and Trainers, the Merry-Go-Round Is All Part of the Game

On a hunch, he asked his trainer Doug O’Neill to give Gutierrez a chance on his 3-year-old colt, I’ll Have Another. Two weeks ago, they won the Kentucky Derby.
Bodemeister, the colt they ran down in the final yards, is ridden by Mike Smith. He is a Hall of Famer, but he was on that colt because of a serendipitous turn.“He was in the right place at the right time,” said Bob Baffert, Bodemeister’s trainer snapback for sale.“There are no guarantees when you’re a race rider.”
Baffert should know — he goes through jockeys the way babies go through diapers.Last week he fired Martin Garcia, who won the 2010 Preakness for him with Lookin at Lucky. In fact, that was the fifth time Baffert captured the second race in the Triple Crown, and Garcia was the fourth rider he did it with. The relationships between trainers and jockeys are like arranged marriages fitted hats.Saying “I do” isn’t really personal authentic new era hats.“There are very good riders that I just can’t win with,” Baffert said atlanta braves hats.“Sometimes you just have to change your luck.”
When the gates open for the 137th Preakness Stakes on Saturday, the jockey merry-go-round will stop for two minutes or so as Smith and Bodemeister try to turn the tables on Gutierrez and I’ll Have Another. It was turning, however, right up until Friday, when Ramon Dominguez got the ride on Tiger Walk after the Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux failed a breath analysis at Belmont Park and was taken off his mounts for the afternoon. But trainers are not the only heavies in the game of musical horses that often occurs around big races NBA snapback hats.
Smith rarely rides for Baffert, but in April he was asked to ride the trainer’s filly Mamma Kimbo in the Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas.
“She was a speed horse, and Mike does well with those kind,” Baffert said, “and he’s won a lot at Oaklawn.”
Smith and Mamma Kimbo won the Fantasy. So Baffert decided to give Smith the mount on Bodemeister — who had a similar running style — the next week in the Arkansas Derby.Again, they were triumphant, and Baffert asked him to ride Bodemeister in the Kentucky Derby.
But Smith had already committed to ride Daddy Nose Best for the trainer Steve Asmussen at the Derby.Asmussen agreed to let Smith go and named Garrett Gomez to ride his colt.
After Daddy Nose Best finished 10th at Churchill Downs, Gomez was out and Asmussen’s go-to rider, Corey Nakatani, was picked to ride the colt in the Preakness.
In 2010, Gomez was the regular rider for Baffert’s Lookin at Lucky, but he was replaced with Garcia for the Preakness after the colt had a troubled trip in the Derby.
Both trainers and jockeys profess that they can adopt a Zen attitude to the relentless shuffling.Often, however, it is apparent that it gets under their skin.
“I’m pretty good with it,” said Gomez, who does not have a mount in the Preakness.“Guys get mad at you, guys want to fire you new era hats for sale. You can’t control when this owner wants this guy on this horse, you can’t control when a trainer decides to take you off new era hats for sale. It’s one of the most frustrating parts of the game, but that’s horse racing.”
In 2010, Garcia was living a similar trajectory as Gutierrez is now. Both are from Mexico, and Garcia had moved from the Northern California circuit to Santa Anita Park to try the big time.Baffert asked him to ride his horses in the mornings, and he would put him on some good ones in the afternoon.Garcia has been one of the nation’s top riders over the past two years, with more than $18 million in purse earnings.
Last week, however, he did not show up on a morning that he was scheduled to ride the trainer’s horses.Baffert had sensed that Garcia wanted to expand his business.
“He wanted to ride for more guys, and I got the impression he thought I was holding him back,” Baffert said.“I got a little upset, but I’m O.K.with it now.I want him to go out there and do it.I like him. He’s a very good rider, and it’s not like I’m going to never ride him again. Now, though, I’m going to spread it around more.”
Baffert has divorced and reconciled with riders before.Gary Stevens won two Preaknesses for him with Silver Charm (1997) and Point Given (2001), Victor Espinoza one on War Emblem (2002) and Desormeaux another on Real Quiet (1998).
Gutierrez, meanwhile, is in no hurry to leave the O’Neill barn.He showed up in Southern California from Canada last fall, and business remains slow.
“I’m still not riding that many horses,” Gutierrez said.“Everybody knows that California racing has top trainers and top jockeys.I’m just glad to be riding with them.I am getting a lot of calls, but not to ride

Game 2: Spurs 105, Clippers 88: Streaking Spurs Go Up 2-0 on Clippers

“I’m old.Used,” said Parker, laughing.
Chris Paul, meanwhile, isn’t acknowledging anything: Not his aching body that everyone but him is talking about, or the Los Angeles Clippers’ season careening toward the end this weekend unless things change fast.
Parker scored 22 points, Duncan had 18 and the Spurs beat the fading Clippers 105-88 on Thursday night, taking a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference semifinals and winning their 16th in a row with yet another playoff blowout.
For the 13th time in a winning streak that seldom run this long in the NBA playoffs, the Spurs won by double digits.Only two other teams have sustained a longer winning streak in the playoffs: the 2004 Spurs (17) and the 2001 Lakers (19).
“I think for us, is to not look at that,” Parker said about the streak.”Concentrate on the task.We know Game 3 is going to be very, very hard.I think we should focus on that and not focus on the winning streak, or what we’re doing good.”
Paul responded to his awful Game 1 with only a slightly better encore, scoring 10 points as the Clippers now head home desperate to steer out of what’s starting to get the feel of a sweep.
Game 3 is Saturday in Los Angeles, and Game 4 is Sunday.
When the Clippers land in California early Friday, they’ll be home for the first time in nearly a week. They’ve played seven games in 13 days, and they’ll have played nine in 16 by the time the weekend is over.
Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro knows his team needs rest.Blake Griffin scored 20 points but added another injury to the list, this time what he described as a hip flexor strain. He’s already battling a sprained left knee and shaking off a turned ankle in Game 1 authentic new era hats.
He had just one rebound.
“We’re not going into these next two games thinking ‘Oh, let’s try to keep it close,’” Griffin said.”There’s no moral victories or moral losses here. We’re not worried about how many points we lost by.”
The All-Star matchup of Paul vs.Parker went from a Game 1 bust to a lopsided mismatch, and appeared to prove Paul is hurting more than he’s letting on.Del Negro says his star is still struggling with an aching hip and groin, even as Paul insists he’s OK Cheap New Era Hats.
He again looked anything but. While Parker — the last of the Big Three to finally hit the big 3-0 — celebrated by more than tripling his seven points and dreadful 1-for-9 shooting in Game 1, Paul shot 4 of 9 and had just five assists.
At halftime, the third-place finisher in the league’s MVP voting had more personal fouls (3) than points (2), assists (2) or rebounds (2).He finished with eight turnovers, a career playoff high.
“No excuses, I’ve just got to play better,” Paul said.”But I don’t ever recall having that many turnovers.
Del Negro said his star will bounce back.
“He’ll get loose here soon,” Del Negro said.”We need him to.”
Duncan, on the other hand, stayed in a playoff time warp adjustable snapback hats.At 36 years old and playing in his 182nd postseason game — and with no contract beyond these playoffs — Duncan turned in another solid performance that sometimes recalled the former MVP who was winning championships in his prime rather than the old-timer who’s chasing a fifth ring now.
He scored 14 points in the first half — almost as much as the rest of the starting lineup — and finished 9-of-14 shooting.Points in the paint weren’t even close: The Spurs had 50, and the Clippers 18.
Boris Diaw added 16 points and Danny Green had 13 for the Spurs.Manu Ginobili scored 10 and was held scoreless in the second half.Randy Foye was the Clippers’ only other player in double digits, scoring 11 Cheap New Era Hats.
If this keeps up, a near-historic postseason for the Clippers will end this weekend unless they figure out a plan fast.
This is only the third time in the woeful 41-year history of the franchise that Los Angeles’ long-maligned “other” team has survived to the second round.Their momentum started with a stunning 27-point comeback on the road against Memphis in their playoff opener, but the Clippers haven’t made a rally stick in San Antonio.A bumbling start had the Clippers already down by 15 in the first quarter before clawing back with a 9-2 burst snapback new era hats.Getting to within 46-42 at halftime had the Clippers’ bench heading to the locker room clapping and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich storming off fuming.
Halfway through the third quarter, however, the lead was back to 16.
“There was a refocus of energy at halftime,” Duncan said.”We came out understanding of what we had to do to finish this game.”
As the deficit deepened, so did the Clippers’ frustration.
DeAndre Jordan seethed and slammed the ball when a missed rotation gave Green an uncontested 3-pointer that stretched San Antonio’s lead to back to double digits in the third.Less than a minute later, Foye trotted upcourt shaking his head after Paul’s fumbled dribble gave Kawhi Leonard a clear path for a breakaway dunk.
Following another 3-pointer by Green— this one pushing San Antonio’s lead to 70-60 — the turned-around Clippers looked so disjointed that Green darted back down and knocked the ball out of Paul’s hands on the ensuing inbound.Notes: The Spurs followed up tying a franchise playoff record with 13 3-pointers in Game 1 with 10 this time new era hats for sale…Talk about a pro cut: A 12-year-old Spurs fan suspended from his San Antonio middle school for shaving the face of forward Matt Bonner in his hair scored free tickets to the game and a meeting with his favorite player before tipoff.Bonner, whose mother is a teacher, said he was puzzled by the school’s decision and gave Patrick Gonzalez an autographed pair of shoes and an autographed jersey.”Keep supporting us redheads in the NBA,” the Red Rocket told his biggest fan wholesale hats

new era snapback Game 3: Kings 2, Coyotes 0: Kings Beat Coyotes and Move to Brink of Stanley Cup Finals

Their answer told Brown that this unbelievable bunch of Kings is almost ready to play for the Stanley Cup.
Anze Kopitar scored the tying breakaway goal just 2:07 later, Dwight King added the winner early in the third period and the Kings rolled to the brink of their first Stanley Cup final in 19 years with a 2-1 victory in Game 3 on Thursday night, taking a 3-0 lead in the West finals.
Quick made 18 saves, and the eighth-seeded Kings improved to 11-1 in an undeniably charmed run through the NHL postseason by a franchise with 44 seasons of frustrating, Cup-free history. For the third straight series, the West’s final playoff team will play for a sweep in Game 4 on Sunday snapback hats for sale.
“Phoenix was a lot better tonight, but we found a way to win,” Brown said.”That’s what it takes this time of year new era snapback. It’s exciting. There’s a lot of guys in here that haven’t experienced this …but the thing that’s made this work is how we’re handling all this. We’re up 3-0 again.”
Although the Kings trailed for the first time in nearly 18 periods since April 28, they bounced back swiftly before largely controlling the third period.King scored his fourth goal in three games against the Coyotes, who face a deficit only three teams have overcome in NHL playoff history.
King connected 1:47 into the third, beating Mike Smith high to the glove side. The massive rookie scored two goals in the series opener and added the winner in Game 2.”Everybody is answering the challenge and being better,” said King, who has outscored the Coyotes all by himself in the series fitted hats.”We’re playing good, playing consistent. With the way we’re going, we’re tough to beat right now.”
Smith stopped 26 shots in a standout performance for the third-seeded Coyotes, who must win four straight to reach their first Stanley Cup final in club history.
“None of us planned on being in (a 3-0 hole),” Phoenix captain Shane Doan said.”I don’t think it’s disbelief, but I think it’s disappointed.”
In front of a long-suffering crowd gratefully enjoying its unexpected good fortune after decades of disappointment, the Kings dominated the third period in front of Quick. They forechecked relentlessly in the final minutes, forcing Smith to play a long stretch without his goal stick because Phoenix couldn’t clear the zone so he could retrieve it.
The crowd soaked in another memorable performance during the best playoff run by this Second Six franchise since Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille led Los Angeles to its only conference title in 1993, while the Coyotes wondered if their own remarkable postseason run has any chance of continuing beyond Sunday.
“We want to play with a lead, but we didn’t even have a chance,” Phoenix’s Mikkel Boedker said.”They got a breakaway and came right back….They’re a good team, and we know that, but the series isn’t over.We still have time to win it.”
Los Angeles largely dominated the first two games of the series in Glendale, outshooting the Coyotes 88-51 while winning by a combined 8-2.Phoenix had no more luck than Vancouver or St.Louis against the surprising No Cheap New Era Hats.8 seeds, who finished two points behind the Pacific Division champion Coyotes in the regular season before steamrolling the West’s top two teams in a combined nine games.
“We’ll take a couple of days here and rest up, and what have we got to lose?” Phoenix coach Dave Tippett asked.”We’ll come here and play as hard as we can. We’ll give a real honest evaluation of who we are and how we got here.”
Phoenix played Game 3 without forward Martin Hanzal, who served a one-game suspension for boarding Brown in Game 3.Doan, who escaped suspension for his own hit, took up the job of agitating Brown, facewashing the Kings’ high-scoring captain with his glove during one scrum.
After Smith came up with several stellar saves during a scoreless first period, Keith Yandle slipped a long pass behind Mike Richards to Langkow, who beat Quick between the legs for his first goal of the postseason 1:03 into the second.Los Angeles hadn’t trailed since the first period of Game 1 in its second-round series with St.Louis 19 days ago.
Staples Center briefly fell silent, but reached full roar moments later when Brown found Kopitar with a long pass behind the Phoenix defense. The Slovenian star beat Smith with a backhand for his fifth goal of the playoffs fitted hats.
The teams were even in goals and shots heading to the third period, but King quickly put Los Angeles ahead with the latest impressive play of his incredible first NHL playoff run.Moments after Smith made a spectacular point-blank save on Stoll, King collected the puck during a delayed penalty and wired a high shot past Smith’s glove into the top corner of the net new era hats for sale.
“What a shot, and an even better look on his face when he saw where it went,” Stoll said.
Tippett didn’t love the call that created the delayed penalty.
“If I told you what I really thought (about the officiating), I think it would cost me a lot of money,” he said.
Phoenix responded to its deficit with more physical play in Game 3, although keeping most of it within legal limits after the borderline goonery of the Game 2 blowout. The Coyotes inserted enforcer Paul Bissonnette into their lineup for the first time since Game 4 of the opening round.
NOTES: The game was the first of six playoff contests in four days at Staples Center, where the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers will host back-to-back second-round playoff games this weekend. The Tour of California — the nation’s largest cycling race — also finishes outside the arena about 30 minutes before the puck drops on Game 4 Sunday….Marc-Antoine Pouliot took Hanzal’s spot in the Coyotes’ lineup, and Bissonnette replaced Gilbert Brule.D Adrian Aucoin has missed the entire series with an injury….The Kings have won seven straight road games, and they stuck with coach Darryl Sutter’s scheme to keep the road vibe at home by staying in a hotel across the street from Staples Center on Wednesday night….USC QB Matt Barkley attended the game wholesale hats

On Hockey: Terse and Testy, and That’s Just the Rangers Coach’s Postgame Interviews

Eventually John Tortorella, the Rangers’ coach, strides in and takes a seat at a blue-draped table in front of a blue-and-silver Stanley Cup backdrop. He sits there and glares, daring someone to speak up and get his head bitten off. With his impatient expression, sweptback hair, barbered goatee and long, hawkish face, he looks like a Venetian doge, unhappy about the latest tax reports and getting ready to order some executions.
Eventually one of the braver reporters will accept a microphone from a team assistant and venture to ask a question about the night’s game.Tortorella’s reply is apt to be “No,” “No comment,” “Next question” or “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Or, if the questioner happens to be Larry Brooks of The New York Post, who has developed a particular knack for getting under Tortorella’s skin, he might just order Brooks to get out of the room.
Tortorella news conferences are like Botox: they don’t last long.He sits there seething, jaw clenched, waiting for a chance to leave. His record for brevity was probably set a year ago, after a loss to the Oilers. He profanely said his team was no good “from head to toe” and was gone in 16 seconds. After the Rangers lost Game 4 to the Capitals earlier this month, he lingered a little longer, saying four words, “The power play” and “No,” before shooting the death glance and departing. He shoots the death glance a lot, a withering stare that makes you feel as if you’re being X-rayed.
His performance Wednesday night, after the Rangers lost Game 2 to the Devils, 3-2, was a vintage one, lasting less than two minutes. What went wrong with the Rangers? “A number of things.I’ll keep it in the room,” he said, meaning the locker room, not the one where he was right then new era snapback for sale.Did he think the Rangers put in the kind of effort he wanted? “No.” Was he disappointed in their performance? “I answered your last question.No.” In what areas does he want to see improvement? “I’d like to keep that in the room.” And then he was gone, back to that other room.
Tortorella’s truculence is almost comical. He is like one of those one-note, choleric characters in Restoration plays. And his terseness is an antidote, certainly, to the other kind of hockey-speak, the one players use in interviews: breathless, run-on monotone sentences aerated by references to hard work and the team and winning the battles for loose pucks.Yet there’s such an excessive, antagonistic quality to some of Tortorella’s news conferences that Mike Sielski of The Wall Street Journal recently asked him whether his behavior stemmed just from not liking the news media, or whether it was part of a strategy.“What, are you being a wise-ass?” Tortorella replied snapback hats for sale.
It may not have begun as such, but by now Tortorella’s style really does seem calculated. He’s playing himself, and he clearly enjoys the role even if nobody else does: the tough-talking hard guy who brings the ethos of that other room, the one open only to real hockey players, to the one where the wimps and the pencil-necks gather. This is how we play, this is how we talk, is the message.Sometimes he can barely contain a smirk NBA snapback hats.
His strategy, if that’s what it is, deflects attention from the team onto himself and has succeeded in scaring at least a few reporters from asking probing questions. There’s not a chance that he will inadvertently reveal something about an injury or a strategy that will help the other team new era hats for sale.He said to Sielski: “I’m not going to give you much information. Some of you guys sit here and tell me I’m curt or whatever new era hats for sale.I’m not going to have a staring contest. If you don’t ask me questions, I’ll just leave. So that’s the way it is.I’m sorry I’m not a guy who wants to converse about everything during the playoffs.I’m not
